The French side tends to move at a slower pace — think open-air markets, long lunches and dinners in Grand Case, and quiet privacy around Terres Basses and its western beaches. Cross to the Dutch side and the energy shifts: Simpson Bay Lagoon's marina life, and a livelier restaurant and nightlife scene take over. Luxury villas are in select enclaves across both sides of the island. We personally like Terres Basses on the French side for its privacy.
